My Hiatus & The Death of My Mom....

Hey everyone!

I know it's been a long time since I last posted on here so I want to thank everyone who's taken the time to check back in.  While my Instagram and Twitter are a of mixture of beauty and my personal life, I try to keep this blog more focused on beauty.  Therefore, if you enjoy reading my blog posts (thank you!) you might have been confused by my recent disappearance. No, I didn't get lazy or bored of blogging, I'll explain now, but if you're not in for some heavy reading you might want to skip this post....

The fact is my Amazing, Beautiful, Strong, Courageous, Inspiring 53 year old mother lost her 5 year battle to breast cancer at the end of June.  It was, ironically, extremely sudden.

She was not afraid to get check ups or see the doctor and they caught her cancer early at Stage 1 with a positive prognosis, and an optimistic outlook.  It was an incredibly difficult and trying year as she bravely went through surgery, chemo and radiation like so many women before her.  She walked in the Susan G. Komen Walk to End Breast Cancer and never once let the disease get the best of her.  She was stronger, more outspoken and more resilient than she'd ever been.  I remember the day she started to lose her hair.  She decided rather than waiting that she would shave it all off.  I was there the day she and her sisters bravely took a razor to her head and took control of what little control in her life she had left.  She rarely complained about feeling sick or of the side effects oF even having cancer.  Instead she asked about me.  About my life, what I was going through, who I was seeing, what I was doing, how I was.

The time in between her "all clear" diagnosis and the "hey now you have Stage 4 Terminal Cancer and at best 2 years left to live" diagnosis is complicated and too long to go into.  She was plagued with maladies that were both the after effects of chemo and new diseases that she had succumb to because of the cancer/effects.  Again, I never heard a word of complaint.

There are different kinds of breast cancer women can get, and my amazing, eat healthy, exercise daily, take care of yourself mother had the worst kind; Triple Negative.  It's the deadliest one, with the least treatment options and the most likely to come back.

I watched as my mom fought.  Valiantly.  Bravely.  Courageously.  Fiercely.  Inspirationally.  If it weren't for the lack of hair on her head people would seriously question if she was even sick.  She was the most heroic, spirited fighter until the very end.

I don't want to go into details here about her final months.  But her final months were not supposed to be her final months.  When someone is diagnosed with terminal cancer you expect, wait for, and dread the "there's nothing more we can do.  Go home, make yourself comfortable and say your goodbyes" conversation.  I mean that's the whole point of having a terminal illness right?  You get to the opportunity to die as you please.  To say your goodbyes.  To tell your last wishes.  To say the things you never said?  She never got that.

None of us wanted that moment to come, and ironically, that moment never came.  Instead, on a calm June morning I came home for a visit, the first of what I promised myself would now be a twice a month thing.  I woke my mom up for a doctor's appointment.  My mom (who, in what were to be the final months of her life, had a trach put into her throat) said it was clogged and she needed to go to the hospital instead.  I took her to the closest hospital, asking them to change the trach tube.  They ran a gamut of tests in the meantime and told us she had "low grade pneumonia" and we could either transfer her to a larger hospital in a different state or leave her overnight as they would "give her the same medicines and monitor her condition so we could decide in the morning".  Nothing was imminent or life threatening.

I called my father to inform him that my mom was in the hospital so he left work early to come.  It just so happened that my brother and sister came too.  It was all part of my mom's final plan.  The family together one last time. The doctors assured us that waiting the night would not make a difference and we could reassess her condition in the morning.  I offered to stay the night but the doctors administered sleeping medicine to my mom and my dad assured me that we would be back early in the morning.

I fell asleep on the couch that night.  I was awoken abruptly and frantically by my father.  He was screaming incoherently about my mother coding and getting dressed to get to the hospital.  I looked for my phone but in the frantic rush to go I had to leave without it.  I've never seen my father drive like that and I will never forget it.  A man rushing to be with his soulmate, a man who's world had come crumbling down.

We arrived at the hospital at around 3am.  My mom had coded for 7 minutes and we had the option to keep her on the breathing tubes and see if/how she came out of them (prognosis not good) or to end her life support.  For me it was a non-decision.  The last time I was home my mom told me she was ready to die.  She didn't want to live on a feeding tube with a trach for the rest of her life.  She just needed to know her family would be OK.   I had told her 'we would be ok', 'I would make sure that we were ok'.  Those words, that conversation, have replayed in my head like a bad commercial jingle.  No matter how long I live those words will haunt me.

My mom, in all her vast, wise, spiritual wisdom had seen this day coming, much sooner than any of us.  She had made sure that her family was around her and she got to mentally say her goodbyes.  She got to hug each of us one last time.  She got to see we were going to be ok.  Then, she got to leave this earth with no one around her to feel scared or worried or panicked.  She made the choice easy and she went out on her own terms.

I write this to attempt to describe some type of semblance of who I was and who I've been since.  I've run the gamut in emotions.  I've been numb, I've been sad, I've been angry, I've been repentant, I've been listless, I've been motionless, I've been motivation-less.  I lost my mom's father 5 months later, the day after Thanksgiving.  Then I lost my mom's dad 2 months later on January 2nd.  Then I lost my dad's dad 12 days later on January 14th.  Apathy is how I live my life these days.  Not a 'I don't give a crap about anything!' apathy, but a 'I'm breathing to survive' apathy.

Through all the haze and the fog I've survived.  I've been blessed with the most amazing friends, who have stood by me through every up and every down.  Who've listened to my tears and took care of when I couldn't.  I have worked for the most wonderful company full of compassionate co-workers and bosses who have let me had my bad days.  I made the best, most amazing decision of my life, getting my little lovebug, Celine Dion Manning.  I've slowly felt the apathy subside and a desire to take control start anew.

I can't promise I'll be the person I was before that day in June or that you'll even like the new me, but I've slowly clawed my way out of the abyss and back into the sun and I'm excited to start blogging again.

As Abraham Lincoln always said, "there's no better way to get over the loss of your mother than by purchasing copious amounts of makeup to review".

See you all soon!

Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude: Purple Eye

I believe this is the last look I made a video for for my Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude palette but I love it!  It's a really pretty, not too over-the-top purple look.  It's super easy to do and doesn't take a lot of time.

Let me know what you think!

Bobbi Brown Soho Chic Eye Look

The other day in one of my Sephora hauls I decided to purchase the Bobbi Brown Soho Chic Eye Look Palette.  It has mostly smokey colors mixed in with a few neutrals.  I thought I would like it, but I am OBSESSED!  It is just gorgeous!!  The colors are amazing, the pigmentation is super thick so you get a great amount of color and the looks just come out gorgeous!  The only complaint I have is that the color tends to flake and fall down as you apply it so it can be extremely messy.

I made a video using the palette to create a super sexy smokey eye look, let me know what you all think!

Multiple Store Beauty Haul

Hey all!

So depending how much you follow my blog, you may be aware that my mom has terminal breast cancer.  She has her good days and her bad days but recently we've really been through the ringer.  Naturally, the smart/good/healthy/wise thing to do is to buy as much makeup as possible to ease the pain.

While it has created an amazing week of distractions I can't say that it necessarily was the best choice.  However, you all lucked out because I have a few hauls coming up for you all!  I purchased some products in a mini-Sephora haul that I posted previously and in this haul there's products from beauty.com, Anastasia, Sephora and Ulta.

Check out all the things I bought to heal the pain <3 lollll

Mini Sephora Haul

I recently did a little mini Sephora haul, acquiring a few products I've wanted for a while but had thus far been able to control myself from buying.  However, my will power went to hell and I ended up purchasing said products.  It was a lot of stuff from Bobbi Brown, a lot of which I was actually really disappointed by and a few other products.  It's not too long of  a haul, there'll be another to follow, so check it out and let me know what you think!

Top 10 Favorite Breast Cancer Awareness Beauty Products

So, for those of you that don't know, Breast Cancer Awareness is something that is very near and dear to me.  My mom currently has stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer.  She caught it early at Stage 1, got treatment and it "went away".  Then about a year and a half later it was back.

While it's phenomenal that we've reached the point where so many women are able to survive this horrible disease, I think we often overlook the women who are not.  The women who don't pass the 5 year "survivor" mark.  The women who catch it early and it comes back.  The women who don't catch it early.  For all those women, and for every woman who has been touched by breast cancer in some way or who is currently fighting/surviving breast cancer it's imperative that we keep up the fight!

I love October because companies really get behind the cause.  Companies that don't donate year round make it a point to donate.  It's a really important month for raising awareness and research funding.  So, I decided to do some perusing and see what companies were offering special products with the proceeds going to a breast cancer charity.  While I haven't had a chance to try all of them yet, I've definitely used this as an excuse to shop (because I need one).  Here are my top 10 favorite products!

1.  Evelyn Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley Dream Pink Collection: I love Estee Lauder because they always go all out in October and support breast cancer awareness year round.  This year Evelyn Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley teamed up to create the 'Dream Pink Collection'.   This collection comes with 2 nail polishes (Blushing Lilac & Berry Hot).  There's also a gorgeous limited edition lipstick called 'Dream Pink'.  And, of course, like any good Estee Lauder collection you get a cute little purse to go with it, this one is a super gorgeous, pink fold over clutch.  For each purchase of the Evelyn Lauder and Elizabeth Hurley Dream Pink Collection, Estée Lauder will donate 20% of the suggested retail price to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation..  Buy here.

2.  O.P.I Pink of Hearts: O.P.I came out with this gorgeous kit that has 2 polishes (Mod About You & a super cute glitter).  It also comes with a cute glittery, pink nail file.  It's perfect for creating a gorgeous look, or using separately and creating multiple looks.  O.P.I. is donating $25,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and $5,000 to Rethink Breast Cancer in Canada! I love the quality of O.P.I. polish so this is definitely worth getting!  Buy it here.

3. Essie Breast Cancer Awareness 2014 Collection:  This collection comes with 3 super cute pink shades, 'Pinking About You', 'I Pink I Can' & 'Pink Happy'.  Essie will be donating a percentage of the collection's sales to City of Hope, a leading cancer research and treatment center recognized by the National Cancer Institute.  Buy it here.

4. Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss Collection:  A super cute collection of Bobbi Brown lipglosses, ranging from a darker, more neutral pink to a bright bubble gum pink.  Definitely worth investing in, you'll get a ton of wear out of each of the colors and the quality is really great.  The brand will donate $12 from the purchase price of the lip gloss set to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Buy it here..

Pretty Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss Collection

5.  Tom Ford Beauty: Talk about awesome: In support of The Estee Lauder Companies' BCA Campaign, Tom Ford Beauty will donate $50,000 to BCRF in 2014 regardless of the purchase of any Tom Ford Beauty products.  I think that is just so unbelievable.  You can literally purchase ANY Tom Ford makeup product and they'll donate.  I'm absolutely obssesed with Tom Ford's Lip Color in 'Flamingo'. Buy it here.

6. Sonia Kashuk Proudly Pink Five-Piece Purse Brush Set:  Sonia Kashuk is a breast cancer survivor herself, so I'm sure this is a cause that is also very near and dear to her.  She's come out with a line of 5 different makeup brushes and fifteen percent of the purchase price of this sleek brush set will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  Buy it here.

7. Eos 3-Piece Breast Cancer Awareness Lip Balm & Lotion Gift Set:   This set has a berry blossom lotion, a strawberry lip balm and a pomegranate lip balm. 100 percent of the net profits will be donated to the breast cancer research department at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (amazing!!!). Buy it here.

8.  Bumble & bumble's Pre-a-Powder Dry Shampoo:  This is Bumble & Bumble' amazing dry shampoo/style extender.  It's great for those days in between shampoos or for when you don't have enough time  to wash and blow dry your hair.  Just use a few spritzes of this and your hair will not only look refreshed but it will be more voluminous and easier to style than before! This also comes with a limited edition pink cap. $5 of every sale will be donated to the The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Buy it here.

10.  Sephora Collection The Beauty of Giving Back Blush Palette:  This gorgeous palette has 3 cream blushes, 3 powder blushes and an ombre bronzer and blush.  The palette has 8 gorgeous, super wearable colors with a little something for everyone.  A portion of the sale of this palette will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is dedicated to preventing and curing breast cancer within our lifetime. Buy it here.

Good Eyebrows Are Key

I have naturally light/thin eyebrows so I've never been a fan of heavily doing them on myself.  In fact, for a long time I avoided doing them at all.  Then, as I got more into makeup and became better at it I realized something was missing.  The second I started filling in my brows it completely finished my face.  You don't realize what a difference this makes until you really see yourself before and after.  I stumbled upon this great BuzzFeed article today about brows and what a difference they make and it's really incredible!
 http://www.buzzfeed.com/melissaharrison/power-brows-can-change-your-entire-face

I did a post back in April with a video showing the different methods for doing your eyebrows.  It's definitely worth checking out if you're not sure what products to use or you're never happy with the look you get.  Eyebrows are the key to framing the face so don't neglect them!

My Brown Eyed Girl

So I know I've done a bunch of these brown eyed looks and I promise to do more blue, but here's another great look for us brown eyes.  It's nothing too complicated and it's a very natural, every day look that is easily replicated.

Let me know what you think!

Empties

I purchase so many products that I either love in the store or swear I'm going to use only to use once or twice and then hate myself for it.  There's nothing worse than seeing a makeup product sit on your counter knowing you're never really going to use it.  That's why I love watching YouTube Empties videos because you can really get a sense of what products other beauty bloggers not only swear by, but also use enough to empty out.  So, I decided to make a video detailing my empty products and explaining why they're so amazing.  Hope you guys like it!

Screw Cancer....I'm Doing a Giveaway of Breast Cancer Awareness Products!

Today I wanted to write about something really personal to me. I try to keep this blog mainly about beauty and makeup and leave the glimpse into my personal life (if you care) on my Instagram and FB pages; but recently in light of some things that happened I wanted to write about this. My mother who is probably the most amazing, strong, inspirational woman I know has Stage 4 terminal Breast Cancer. She beat it at Stage 1, went into remission and now the bastard’s back. She’s on her third round of chemo in 3 years and she is fighting like a champion. She’s so strong willed and just incredibly positive, legitimately living up to the saying ‘carpe diem’. Obviously she has a long road ahead of her but she takes it one day at a time and is so selfless, never putting herself first (sometimes even to her detriment). My aunt also had breast cancer and she was lucky enough to beat it and I believe she’s past her 5 year mark which is considered survivor status!! I know so many other women in my life who have had or who have breast cancer and it affects so many families and so many people every year that I wanted to write a post with a little shout out to one of the companies you can buy products where the proceeds go to charities fighting cancer.

In looking for products it made me kind of sad that because it wasn't October (aka Breast Cancer Awareness Month) and there were so few companies that actually offered products with proceeds going to these charities that I wanted to shed some light on the companies that are still fighting the fight! So I've decided to purchase one these products to support these companies and do a giveaway to share the love!  Since I absolutely love Estee Lauder products I chose to go with theirs.  It's a super cute kit that comes with a cute purse, a lipstick and a lipgloss!

Rules:

To enter the giveaway either follow my blog on eBlogger, bloglovin or google and leave a comment letting me know you did, follow me on Instagram at Kelzz78 or on Twitter at beautyHuddle!  I'll be announcing the winner on my blog Monday, June 16th!  Good luck and let's kick cancer in the ASS!

My New Obsession: TOO FACED Bonjour Soleil Limited Edition Summer Bronzing Wardrobe

So I've been gone for a hot minute.  I recently moved apartments and for anyone who's done this you know what a nightmare it is!   I don't currently have internet so sadly it will be a minute before my videos are back up and running, so I wanted to post a product review.  I recently became a HUGE fan of Too Faced.  I love their bronzer, their highlighter, their mascara, pretty much everything!  So when I saw this super cute kit I immediately had to buy it!  The set comes with the Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer, which I LOOOOVE!  The Sun Bunny Nautral Bronzer, which has a little bit of shimmer to it so it's perfect for the summer.  The Snow Bunny Luminous Bronzer, which is great for lighter skin tones and a brush to apply it with.  It also comes in this super cute kit so it's perfect for throwing in your purse or your makeup bag when you travel!

The other thing I love about this is it gives instructions on where to place each of the bronzers (though you should still watch my Highlight and Contour video!    This kit is awesome, you can get it at Sephora, any department store that sells too faced or online.  It's only $44 and speaking from experience, you will get a LOT of use out of it!  Can't wait to rock all of these bronzers :)

Until next time....when I finally have internet!

Turquoise Eye Shadow

So you know those shades that you see every time you go into a store but you never know when you'd actually wear it?  Well there's this gorgeous turquoise shade, Aquadisiac, that I see every time I go into Mac and am obsessed with but I 'm always like when am I actually going to wear this?  Well I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase it and I have never been more happy!

I used the turquoise on my lids and then some lighter mixed with a darker blue colors for the crease so as to not be too in-your-face and I think it came off really nicely!  What do you think?

Simple Makeup for the Office/Work

I know a lot of people who don't like wearing a lot of makeup to work, who don't have time or who just work in professions where too much makeup is unprofessional.  That being said there are ways you can wear makeup without looking like you're wearing makeup.  I tried to make a video that not only would be office appropriate, but that would be a quick, fast look that you could apply quickly in the morning before work.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Pop of Color: Green Eyes

I love bright colors to play around with on the weekends or for photoshoots.  They're just so much fun and there's so much you can do with it!  My go-to is usually purple, which I've done in a few tutorials so far.  So this time I thought I would try green!  I have to give credit to the amazing girl at Mac who helped me pick out some of these colors, but I'm so glad I did!  I'm loving the brightness of the look and how fun it is!  Check out the video and tell me what you think!
